PREREQUISITES:

A minimum of 3 years of H.S. math,including 2 years of algebra, 1/2 year of plane geometry & 1/2 year of trigonometry is recommended.

EXAMINATIONS:

Midterm Exam #1 - Wednesday, September 20; Chs. 1-5

Midterm Exam #2 - Wednesday, October 18; Chs. 6-9

Midterm Exam #3 - Monday, November 20; Chs. 9-13

Final Exam - Tuesday, December 12; Chs. 1-13

STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE:

The course consists of three parts: Lecture, Recitation, and Laboratory.

· The large Lecture section will emphasize conceptual understanding, attempting to develop insights with a minimum of mathematics.

· The Recitation sections will be broken into smaller groups where both conceptual insights and problem solving skills are developed.

· The Laboratory sections will seek to reinforce the concepts hands on experiences with these concepts.

GRADES: Grades given are the traditional grades of A, B, C, D, and F including (+/-). Grade assignments are based on the combination of five scores as follows:

Laboratory Grade*.... 10%

Quiz Grade................ 20%

First Midterm............. 15%

Second Midterm......... 15%

Third Midterm............. 15%

Final Exam.................. 25%

*Please note: In addition to its percentage contribution to the grade, the Laboratory must be completed with a satisfactory mark (60% or better) to pass the course, irrespective of the other scores.

EXAMINATIONS:

· The three midterm and final examinations will be multiple choice in construction, and will involve both conceptual understanding and problem solving, with an emphasis on conceptual aspects.

· Quizzes will also be given occasionally in the Recitation Sections.

· Exams will be closed book, but a sheet with useful constants and relationships will be provided.
