Catalog Description

To be taken in conjunction with music theory. Fundamental keyboard skills including harmony, technique, transposition, improvisation, sight reading, score reading, and ensemble playing

Syllabus

BASIC THEORY

  1. SCALES

       Major, minor, chromatic, blues, Modes

  1. ARPEGGIOS

       Major, minor,

  1. CHORDS-FUNCTIONAL (ROMAN NUMERAL )and POP CHORD SYMBOLS

       Major, minor, augmented, diminished, 7th chords,

       Primary, secondary, and secondary dominant chords in all keys

  1. READING OF CHORDS AT THE PIANO AND IDENTIFYING THEM WITH FUNCTIONAL OR POP SYMBOLS
  2. TRANSPOSITION TO ALTERNATE KEYS, MODES AND ALSO
  3. FOR SOUND OF Bb, Eb, F, G and C instruments and including some instrumental score reading such as string quartets.
  4. DEVELOP ABILITIES IN SIGHTREADING BOTH RHYTHMS AND NOTES 2-stave through 4 part open score.

Materials will include textbook, HARMONIZATION AT THE PIANO, Frackenpohl

TECHNOLOGY-   Using Clavinova Lab and video monitor

SUPPLEMENTARY MUSIC –including choral octavos, piano literature, duet and ensemble literature

       8.    IMPROVISATION BASED ON CHORD PROGRESSIONS, BLUES SCALES, RHYTHMS, ETC.

Curriculum Fit

All Music Majors are required to take piano classes in order to fully understand theory. Piano majors do not have this opportunity while they are taking music theory. They need keyboard skills apart from their study of repertoire.
