Curriculum Fit

Most graduate research in EEES involves field projects that require surveying, GPS and/or GIS.  This course will instruct students using hardware and software available within our Department.

Similarity to Other

Courses

This course includes some material taught in GEPL 5180 (Geographic Information Systems Application), GEPL 5510 (Geographic Information Systems) and GEPL 5520 (Analytical and Computer Cartography).  This course differs in several aspects: (1) this new course emphasizes hands-on field experience with tools needed to generate spatial information in settings ecologists and geologists are likely to encounter; (2) GIS emphasizes the practical and pragmatic synthesis of field data with computerized mapping – students who require depth of knowledge in theoretical cartography are better served in taking courses offered by GEPL; (3) analytical GIS tools essential to social sciences are not emphasized.
