Catalog Description |
Poetry, essays and criticism
of the early Romantic movement with emphasis on the writings of Blake,
Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Lamb. Recommended: ENGL 2730, 2800, or 3790. |
Study of major authors and
genres of the Romantic period: approximately 1789 to 1837. |
|
Reason for Change |
(1) Splitting this literary period into Early &
Late Romanticism offers a level of specialization unnecessary for students
who wish to be introduced to Romantic literature. (2) It also increases the chances that our students
will be forced to choose between early and late Romanticism instead of taking
both, thus depriving them of exposure to major authors in what is, relatively
speaking, a very short literary period.
(3) We do not have enough tenured or tenure-track
faculty to accommodate regularly teaching both ENGL 4500 and 4510. (4) Recent scholarship in the nineteenth century
increasingly treats "the long nineteenth century" as one period;
hence, retaining a division of the Romantic era into two separate courses
works against current trends in Romanticism scholarship. |
