Curriculum Fit |
Microbial communities are
at least indirectly responsible for the majority of natural processes
occurring in our environment. Since
the Department of Earth, Ecological, and Environmental Sciences combines
courses relevant to many of these processes (Biodegradation, Environmental
Microbiology, Soil Ecology, Aquatic Ecology, etc.), it is imperative that the
department provides a course that will somehow connect these major
disciplinary foci. The proposed
course will supply a coupling of differing departmental disciplines by
providing undergraduate and graduate students with the basic knowledge of
habitats and processes surrounding microbial communities. Additionally, attention will be given to
the methods that are currently used to investigate these communities. Given the specific interests of the EEES
students (undergraduate and graduate), we estimate that 15-20 students per
term will attend this class. |
