Proposed

Prerequisite(s)          MATH 2850 (or 3860)

Catalog Description Designed to prepare students for higher mathematics. Techniques of proving theorems, including proofs by induction, elementary set theory, equivalence relations and a discussion of the real number system .  Proofs of some basic theorems from algebra, calculus or number theory will be studied. Prerequisite: MATH2850 (or 3860)

Reason for change:  The syllabus change will allow instructor to use a broader selection of mathematical topics in introducing the techniques of higher mathematics. Also raising the prerequisite to Calculus III from Calculus II will give students some exposure to vector spaces which should increase their preparation for understanding other axiomatic structures in MATH3190.      Effective:  Fall 2003
